Components of Standard Precautions

Hand hygiene | Removing surface contaminants on the skin by either hand washing or hand antisepsis. |
Use of personal protective equipment (e.g., gloves, gowns, masks) | Garments that block the transfer of pathogens from one person, place, or object to oneself or others. |
Safe injection practices | Infection control measures that prevent the transmission of viral hepatitis B (HBV) and hepatitis C through the use of aseptic techniques involving the prep and administration of parenteral medications. |
Safe handling of potentially contaminated equipment or surfaces in the patient environment | Ensure that soiled reusable equipment is cleaned and disinfected or sterilized. |
Respiratory hygiene/cough etiquette | Infection prevention measures to decrease the transmission of respiratory illness such as influenza or cold viruses in healthcare facilities where patients, employees, and visitors may not be immediately recognized as having a respiratory infection. |
