The Senses

Accommodation Mechanism that allows the eye to focus at various distances
Bulbus oculi The eyeball
Chemoreceptor Detects the presence of chemicals
Cochlea Snail-shaped portion of the inner ear
Crista ampullaris Receptor organ located within the ampulla of the semicircular canals
General Senses Located throughout the body
Gustatory sense Sense of taste
Lacrimal apparatus Produce and convey tears
Macula lutea Yellowish depression on the retina
Mechanoreceptors Sensory receptors that respond to a bending or deformation of the cell
Nociceptors Pain receptors
Olfaction Sense of smell
Otoliths Little stones of calcium carbonate in the macula of the inner ear
Photoreceptors Sensory receptors that detect light
Proprioception Sense of the body position and movements
Refraction Bending of light as it passes from one medium to another
Rhodopsin Photosensitive pigment in the rods
Sensory adaptation Receptors sensitivity decreases with prolonged stimulation
Special senses Senses with receptors localized in a particular area
Thermoreceptors Sensory receptors that detect changes in temperature
