Hemolysis | Destruction of red blood cells (RBC) |
Pathogen | Disease producing microorganism |
Toxins | Poisonous or harmful substances. |
Antigen | Any substance that the body regards as foreign. This includes viruses, bacteria, toxins, and transplanted tissue. The immune system immediately responds to the presence of any antigen. |
Antibody | Also called immunoglobulin. It is a disease fighting protein produced by the immune system in response to the presence of any antigen. |
Lymphadenitis | Inflammation of the lymph nodes (This is spelled incorrectly as “lymphadentitis” on the handout) |
Insomnia | A chronic condition in which the patient can not get sleep or stay asleep at night. |
Anaphylaxis | A severe response to an allergen. It is a systemic reaction. Blood pressure drops, bronchi constrict, hives appear. |
AIDS | Acquired immunodeficiency syndrome |
Oncology | The study of the prevention, causes, and treatment of tumors and cancer. |
Incident | Any event that has harmed or could harm a patient, resident, visitor, or staff member. |
Chemical restraint | Any drug that is used for discipline or convenience and not required to treat medical symptoms. |
Body alignment | The way the head, trunk, arms, and legs are aligned with one another (posture). |
Body mechanics | Using the body in a careful and efficient way. |
Ergonomics | The science of designing a job to fit the worker |
Friction | The rubbing of one surface against another |
Logrolling | Turning the person as a unit, in alignment, with one motion |
Shearing | When the skin sticks to a surface while muscles slide in the direction the body is moving |
Drawsheet | A small sheet placed over the middle of the bottom sheet |
Aspiration | Breathing food, vomitus, fluid, or an object into the lungs |
Diaphoresis | Profuse sweating |
Plaque | A thin film that sticks to the teeth. It contains saliva, microbes, and other substances. |
Alopecia | Hair loss |
Anticoagulant | A drug that prevents or slows down blood clotting |
Hirsutism | Excessive body hair |
Pediculosis capitis | Head lice |
Pediculosis corporis | Body lice |
Pediculosis pubis | Pubic lice |
Hematuria | Blood (hemat) in the urine (uria) |
Nocturia | Frequent urination (uria) at night (noct) |
Oliguria | Scant amount (olig) of urine (uria). Less than 500mL in 24 hours). |
Polyuria | Abnormally large amounts (poly) of urine (uria) |
Colostomy | A surgically created opening (stomy) between the colon (col) and abdominal wall |
Fecal impaction | The inability to control the passage of feces and gas through the anus |
Flatulence | The excessive formation of gas or air in the stomach and intestine |
Peristalsis | The alternating contraction and relaxation of intestinal muscles |
Stoma | A surgically created opening seen through the abdominal wall |
Anorexia | The loss of appetite Without (an) appetite (orexia) |
Dysphagia | Difficulty (dys) swallowing (phagia) |
Calorie | The fuel or energy value of food |
Enuresis | Urinary incontinence |
Phantom pain | Pain felt in a body part that is no longer there |
REM sleep | The phase of sleep where there is rapid eye movement (REM) |
NREM sleep | The phase of sleep where there is no rapid eye movement (non-REM sleep) |
