| Term | Definition |

| Hypertension | Higher than normal blood pressure. |
| Symptom | Subjective evidence of a disease such as pain or headache. Can be evaluated by the patient only. |
| Hypotension | Lower than normal blood pressure. |
| Signs | Objective evidence of disease such as fever, rash, or blood pressure. Can be evaluated by a patient or others. |
| Diagnosis | The identification of the disease. |
| Acute | Rapid onset, a severe course, in a relatively short amount of time. |
| Chronic | Condition has a long duration. Although such diseases can be controlled, they are rarely cured. |
| Prognosis | A prediction of a probable course and outcome of a disorder. |
| Remission | The temporary, partial, or complete, disappearance of a disease without having achieved a cure. |
| Triage | Medical screening of patients to determine their priority of need and proper place of treatment. |
| Suppuration | The formulation or discharge of pus. |
| Palpitation | Pounding heart. |
| Gastralgia | Stomach pain. |
| Atherosclerosis | Abnormal hardening of the walls of an artery due to cholesterol. |
| Itis | Inflammation. |
| Sclerosis | Abnormal hardening. |
| Stenosis | Abnormal narrowing. |
| Intramuscular | Inject into the muscle. |
| Intravenous | Inject into the vein. |
| Intradermal | Inject into the skin. |
| Acronym | Word formed from the initial letters of the major parts of a compound term. |
| Ologist | Specialist. |
| Scopy | Visual examination. |
| Arthr | Joint. |
| Nosocomial | Infection acquired in a hospital setting. Also know as a Healthcare Associated Infection (HAI). |
| Iatrogenic | Unfavourable response to prescribed medical treatment, such as severe burns from radiation. |
| Pathologist | Specialises in the laboratory analysis of tissue samples to confirm or establish the diagnosis of a disease. |
| Etiology | Cause of disease. |
| Homeostasis | The process through which the body maintains a constant internal environment. |
