TermDefinition
Intermediate Directions A COMPASS ROSE can also be made to show intermediate directions: northwest; southwest; northeast; southeast.
Compass Rose A COMPASS ROSE gives directions for a map. + North at the top; South at the bottom; West on the left; East on the right.
Legend / Key A Map Legend/Key has symbols in a box that help you read the information on the map. Ex: Dots or colors on a population map show where people live.
Physical Map A PHYSICAL Map shows land and water and landforms such as rivers, mountains, plains, deserts, etc. MOST PEOPLE ON EARTH LIVE ON PLAINS NEAR RIVERS OR LAKES. This is because they need fresh water to survive. (Austin is located on the Colorado River.)
Politcal Map A Political Map shows MAN-MADE (Human Created) BOUNDARIES to locate countries, states, provinces, etc.
Population Density Map A population density map shows the area where the population is the greatest by having lots of dots or darker colors where most people live.
Eastern Hemisphere All land and water EAST of the PRIME MERIDIAN are in the EASTERN HEMISPHERE.
Western Hemisphere All land and water WEST of the PRIME MERIDIAN are in the WESTERN HEMISPHERE.
Northen Hemisphere EVERYTHING above the EQUATOR is the NORTHERN HEMISPHERE.
Southern Hemisphere EVERYTHING below the EQUATOR is the SOUTHERN HEMISPHERE.
Human-Environment Interaction Human-environment interaction is when people interact with the land and/ or water to make changes that help them.
Map Scal Map Scale helps you measure distance on a map. Ex: 1 inch = 200 miles.
Equator The EQUATOR divides the earth into northern and southern hemispheres.
Prime Meridian The PRIME MERIDIAN divides the earth into Eastern and Western Hemispheres.
