TermDefinition
Sweat Glands Glands in the skin that produce perspiration also called sudoriferous glands.
Sudoriferous glands Glands in the skin that produce perspiration also called sweat glands.
Subcutaneous Layer A sheet of areolar connective tissue and fat tissue beneath the dermis of the skin.
Stratum Corneum Outermost layer of the epidermis, consist of flatten, dead keratinized cells.
Stratum Corium Another name for the dermis, a layer of skin.
Sebum Oily secretion from sebaceous glands.
Sebaceous glands Oily glands of the skin that produce sebum and body oil.
Melanocytes Cells that produce the dark or black pigment.
Melanin A dark brown/ black pigment found in parts of the body, especially skin & hair.
Keratinization Process by which the cells of the epidermis become filled with keratin& move to the surface where they are sloughed off.
Hypodermis Below the skin: a sheet of areolar connective tissue& fat beneath the dermis of the skin.
Epidermis Outermost layer of skin.
Dermis Inner layer of skin that contains the blood vessels, nerves,glands& hair follicles.
Cutaneous Membrane Another name for skin.
Ceruminous Glands Glands in the ear that produce earwax.
Arrector pili Muscle associated with hair follicles
