QuestionAnswer
Agriculture vital to economy, employs 13.6%, traditional family practices, subsistence, underdeveloped, sheep rearing, dry stock cattle, unsuitable for tillage, less than 0.5% cereals, subdividing land prior to famine, average size 25 hectares, not intensively farmed
agriculture 2 low levels of mechanization, 60% of farmers over 55 years, many reluctant to modernize, conventional farming, young people reluctant to farm, land abandoned, highly subsidized by EU, 14% economically viable,
agriculture 3 50% farmers are part-time, hobby farming for sentimental reasons:niche markets, multi functional(B&B, hill walking, craft foods, pet farms), changes traditional farming, commercial
name 3 factors that influence agriculture in the western region climate, relief and drainage, soils
climate cool temperate oceanic, temperature are more moderate, winters are mild with average temperatures of 6 degrees. summers are relatively cool, with he average temperatures of 15 degrees. this gives and annual temp range of 9 degrees.
climate 2 the climate of the west influences all other physical factors. high levels of precipitation and lower temperatures limit tillage farming. heavy rainfall has led to the development of less fertile soils due to leaching, erosion and water-logging.
climate 3 cooler temperatures have led to a shorter growing season. cattle housed for longer periods. large amounts of silage and other feeds must be given to the animals for many months of the year. this adds to farm expenditure and reduces income for the farmer.
relief and drainage much of the land is unsuitable for agriculture. access by machinery is more difficult. rainfall is heaviest along upland areas, leading to water logging. water logging has led to the formation of blanket bogs along the slopes of the mountains.
relief and drainage 2 glaciers moved across the landscape and scraped away much of the overlying soil, leaving bare and infertile. the soil is thin and stony, making it difficult to cultivate. glacial deposits disrupted drainage.
soils boulder clay is impermeable, causing water-logging and marshland to develop, which is unsuited to intensive agriculture. many of the breeds of sheep kept are suited for mountainous landscape. the upland relief shortens the growing season.
soils 2 upland areas are covered in infertile peat soils, which are prone to water-logging. infertile soils limit most agriculture to sheep ad cattle rearing.severe leaching has formed infertile podzols, e.g. in east may
