What is a CIWA for? To determine any anxiety or pain the patient may be going through.
Why do you do a CIWA? To determine if the patient is going through alcohol withdrawal.
What do we watch for in the neonate whose mother consumed alcohol during pregnancy? Microencephaly, irritability in infancy, facial, limb and cardiovascular defects.
This is the #1 preventable cause of mental retardation. Fetal Alcohol Syndrome.
What things would you watch for in an adolescent who is drinking? Abrupt mood or attitude changes, apathy, sleepiness, temper outbursts, stealing or borrowing money, skipping school, slipping grades or new friends.
Risks of adolescents drinking: Motor vehicle accidents,crimes, alcohol poisoning.
Why do adults and senior citizens abuse alcohol? stress, pain, or loneliness and isolation
Some patient get alcohol by doctors order to control the amount and starve off alcohol withhdrawal, why? Because you can die going through alcohol withdrawal.
What would you watch for in an adult to know if they are going through alcohol withdrawal? Mood swings, depression, confusion, poor hygien, unexplained reactions to prescribed meds.
One of the major reasons for people coming into the ER is because they are: Drinking alcohol and taking prescription drugs together.
Which medications commonly come to mind that you would not drink alcohol with? Opioids, sedatives, hypnotics, acetaminophen, motrin and antibiotics.
What effect can Halodane have on the body if you take it with alcohol? It can cause liver damage.
What effect does alcohol have on antiibiotics? It alters their effectiveness.
What effect does alcohol have on Flagyl? It can cause headaches and convulsions.
What effect does alcohol have on coumadin? It can increase the risk for hemorrhage.
What effects does alcohol have on antidepressants? It can increase the sedative effect.
How does alcohol effect glucose control? Alcohol can cause poor blood glucose control. It has calories, but no nutrition. The patient can have blood sugar issues.
There are established links to hepatic and pancreatic damage in persons who: Abuse alcohol
What are some of the alcohol links that arent' obvious at first? Bleeding, stomach, cardiac, and brain.
What is the CAGE questionaire? A quick way to identify if a patient has alcohol dependency. It is positive if yes is answered to 2 or more questions.
What are the questions of the CAGE? Have you ever felt you should CUT down on your drinking? have people ANNOYED you by criticizing your drinking? have you ever felt GUILTY about your drinking? Have you ever had a drink first thing in the morning (EYE OPENER) to steady your nerves?
