Rationale for IV med

QuestionAnswer
What is the differance between flushing an IV lock with heparin or normal saline? These both maintain patency of the IV lock. Saline is frequently used for peripheral locks.
Why is it improtant to preapre IV fluids according to manufacturers direction? It is important to have the correct dose and the correct dilution.
Whats so important about performing hand hygiene and putting on gloves for IV locks. this reduces the transmission of microorganisms and reduces the likelihood of the nurses hands contacting the clients blood.
Why would you identify the client prior to performing a procedure on an IV lock? this ensures that the right client receives the medication.
Why would you use the push-stop-push-stop technique to give IV meds? this created a turbulance in the flow through the catheter which reduces the residue buildup in th line and the potential for occlusion.
Clean diaphram of IV lock with antiseptic swab. Why? this prevents microorganisms from entering the circulatory system during the needle insertion.
Why do you aspirate for blood prior to flushing an IV lock? The presence of blood confirms that the catheter or needle is in the vein.
What happens if IV medications are not injected slowly at the recommended rate of infusion? Injecting the drug to rapidly can have a serious untoward reaction.
What is the purpose of flushing an IV lock with 1 mL of saline? This removes blood and heparin (if present) from the needle and the lock.
What is the purposes of a second flush, after the medication has been administered, in th IV lock? The saline injection flushes the medicaiton through the catheter and prepares the lock for heparin if the medication is used. Heparin is incompatible with many medications.
Why is an injection port important in an existing line? An injection port must be used because it is self sealing. Any puncture to the plastic tubing will leak.
What good comes out of disposing equipment according to company policy? this reduces needlestick injuries and spread of microorganisms.
