Intramuscular

Chap. 35

QuestionAnswer
INJECTIONS THAT ARE INTO MUSCLE TISSUE INTRAMUSCULAR INJECTIONS
WHY ARE IM INJECTIONS ABSORBED MORE QUICKLY THAN SUBQ INJECTIONS? BECAUSE OF THE GREATER BLOOD SUPPLY TO THE BODY MUSCLES. MUSCLES CAN ALSO TAKE A LARGER VOLUME OF FLUID W/O DISCOMFORT THAN SUBQ TISSUES CAN.
HOW MUCH MEDICATION CAN SAFELY TOLERATED IN A IM INJECTION? 3 ML IN THE GLUTEUS MEDIUS AND GLUTEUS MAXIMUS MUSCLES, AND 1 TO 2ML IS USUALLY RECOMMENDED FOR ADULTS WITH LESS DEVELOPED MUSCLES. IN THE DELTOID MUSCLE, 0.5 TO 1 ML ARE RECOMMENDED.
WHAT SIZE SYRINGE IS USUALLY RECOMMENDED FOR IM INJECTIONS? 3 TO 5 ML. THE SIZE OF THE SYRINGE DEPENDS ON THE AMT OF MEDICATION BEING ADMINISTERED.
WHAT SIZE AND GAUGE NEEDLES ARE STANDARDS FOR AN IM INJECTION? 1 1/2 IN AND #21 OR #22 GAUGE.
SEVERAL FACTORS INDICATE THE SIZE AND LENGTH OF THE NEEDLE USED. THEY ARE: THE MUSCLE, THE TYPE OF SOLUTION, THE AMOUNT OF ADIPOSE TISSUE COVERING THE MUSCLE, AND THE AGE OF THE CLIENT
GIVING AN INJECTION INTO THE DELTOID MUSCLE, A SMALLER NEEDLE IS USED. WHAT SIZE IS RECOMMENDED? #23 TO #25 GAUGE NEEDLE, 1 IN LONG. HOWEVER, MORE VISCOUS SOLUTIONS REQUIRE A LARGER GAUGE, #20.
IF GIVING AN IM INJECTION TO A VERY OBESE CLIENT, IT MAY REQUIRE A LONGER NEEDLE. THE SIZE COULD POSSIBLY BE: LONGER THAN 1 1/2 IN (2 IN)
AN EMACIATED CLIENT MAY REQUIRE A SHORTER NEEDLE IN AN IM INJECTION. WHAT SIZE WOULD BE RECOMMENDED? 1 IN
A MAJOR CONSIDERATION IN THE ADMINISTRATION OF IM INJECTIONS IS THE SELECTION OF A SAFE SITE LOCATED AWAY FROM LARGE BLOOD VESSELS, NERVES, AND BONE. WHAT ARE THE SITES COMMONLY USED? VENTROGLUTEAL SITE, VASTUS LATERALIS, DORSOGLUTEAL SITE, DELTOID SITE, RECTUS FEMORIS SITE
CONTRAINDICATIONS FOR USING A SPECIFIC SITE INCLUDE: TISSUE INJURY, PRESENCE OF NODULES, LUMPS, ABCESSES, TENDERNESS, OR OTHER PATHOLOGY.
