How are features formed in the upper course of a river? formed by the processes of erosion
What are waterfalls? waterfalls are vertical interruptions in the rivers profile that occur due to vertical erosion
name two examples of waterfalls torc waterfall in killarney co.kerry and powerscourt falls co.wicklow.
How can they occur? they can occur due to faulting when a section of rock is uplifted above the rest causing the river to flow over the edge.
what occurs during the youthful stage of the river? the river has a high velocity and therefore high erosive power which vertically erodes the river bed.
what is differental erosion? the soft rock is eroded at a much faster rate than the hard rock, a process known as differential erosion
what happens overtime? physical weathering reduces the height of the gorge as rock is broken down into scree and transported away by the river
