Occupied Bed

Bed Making - Occupied

QuestionAnswer
Step 1 Knock before entering the room. Identify and greet resident. Explain procedure. Wash your hands. Provide for privacy. Ask for consent.
Step 2 * Raise bed rails. Raise bed to best level for good body mechanics.
Step 3 Lower side rail nearest you.
Step 4 Wear gloves if linens are soiled. (may verbalize)
Step 5 Loosen the top bedding at foot of bed. Remove spread and/or blanket.
Step 6 Place bath blanket over top sheet. Remove top sheet without exposing resident.
Step 7 Keep pillow under resident’s head and turn resident to side of bed not being made.
Step 8 Loosen bottom bedding; free bottom linen and roll each piece separately to the resident’s back.
Step 9 Place bottom fitted sheet lengthwise on the mattress. Face hem stitching downward.
Step 10 Tuck corner of fitted sheet under head and foot of mattress. Tuck the sheet under the mattress from the head to the foot.
Step 11 Place draw sheet on middle of mattress; fanfold 1/2 to resident’s back and tuck in excess material.
Step 12 * Raise side rail of bed.
Step 13 Go to opposite side of bed; lower bedside rail.
Step 14 Move resident to clean side of bed and then place pillow under resident’s head.
Step 15 Pull through all bottom linen. Roll, remove, and discard soiled linen in laundry hamper or bag. Hold soiled linen away from own uniform.
Step 16 . Pull clean bottom sheet toward the edge of bed. Tuck it under the mattress at the head of the bed and make a mitered corner, tuck it well under the side of the mattress.
Step 17 Pull the sheet toward foot of bed and remove all wrinkles. Pull the draw sheet; tighten, and tuck excess under the mattress.
Step 18 Assist resident to center of bed.
Step 19 Place top sheet over bath blanket; ask resident to hold or tuck under resident’s shoulders. Remove bath blanket. Replace blanket/spread.
Step 20 Tuck sheet, blanket, and bedspread at foot of bed under mattress and miter corners on each side, allowing for movement of resident's feet.
Step 21 Change pillowcase and place pillow under resident’s head. Provide for comfort.
Step 22 * Raise side rail. Lower bed. Lower side rail. Attach signal light within resident’s reach. Put dirty linen in the hamper.
Step 23 Wash hands and report & record observations.
