How does one establish their own role? -They reflect goals-Mesh with partners role-learned directly and indirectly through interactions
Acribed Role roles in which a person formally assumes responsibility for carrying out an established set of norms.(charge nurse)*can be culturally defined as well (sex, age...)
Acheived Role Role which is assumed as a result of an accomplishment
Adopted Role Role which is assumed for the acheivment of a specific goal (stern parent of rebellious teen)
Assumed Role Role taken up or already possessed as an integral part of the personality (playing house)
Role Conflict friction among two or more roles that a person is expected to perform
Role Distance a gap or contradiction between ones role and ones self concept (flashy dresser difficulty conforming to work dresscode)
Role Blurring Occurs when expectations and chaacteristics or roles and associated behavior are unclear and there is no consensus on them (often causes conflict when a person assumes a role that is not believed to belong to them)
Role Development Parenting- promotes growth and development of another human being as well as for themselves
Authorative Parenting Style -uses reason and explanation when directing-encourage competence-exhibit warmth, concern and interest-children are more responsible,active, and successful
Authoritarian Parenting Style -more dominating-inficts punishment-unrealistic standards-"do it because I say so"
Permissive Parenting Style -exhibits little control-no structure
Altruism Model of Parenting -infants need skin contact from parents -be responsive to childs signals-parents need authorative parenting styles-promote mastery of language skills (start early)-arrange learning experiences -families need to feel "crazy" about their kids
Limit setting/Disciplining kids -reasoning-behavior modification-ignoring-consequences-time-out-corporal or physical punishment
Guidelines for Implementing Discipline -consistancy-timing-commitment-unity-flexibility-planning-dissapprove of behavior not child-privacy-termination
