Revision for the Mid-term test for Geography
Term | Definition |
---|---|
Footloose Industry | An industry that is not tied to one specific location. |
Light Industry | Industry that makes smaller products from less bulky material, for example PC Pro in Toher, Co. Cork. Located in industrial estates, and normally footloose. |
Heavy Industry | Industry that produces large, heavy products from bulky material, for example Irish Cement in Drogheda, Co. Louth. Typically not footloose. |
Inputs | Things put into an industry for it to function. |
Processes | Things that occur within an industry to make the finished product. |
Outputs | Anything the industry generates as a result of its processes. |
PC Pro - Inputs | Factory building, staff, imported PC components, electricity, capital (money) |
PC Pro - Processes | Tagging and shelving, ordering, selection, assembly, quality control, burn-in, packaging and delivery |
PC Pro - Outputs | Assembled computers, profit, happy customer, waste |
Irish Cement - Inputs | Processing plant, workers, capital, electricity, water, limestone, gypsum |
Irish Cement - Processes | Crushing, milling, burning, grinding, bagging |
Irish Cement - Outputs | Cement, profit, waste |
Evaporation | The sun heats water until it evaporates from the rivers, lakes or seas. |
Condensation | Water vapour cools and condenses to form a cloud. |
Precipitation | As the cloud further cools and condenses, it gets heavy and falls as precipitation. There are nine forms of precipitation; the most common is rain. |
Run-off | When rain reaches the ground it runs into rivers or is absorbed as groundwater. Eventually it makes its way back to the sea and the cycle begins again. |
Acid rain - Causes | Sulphur dioxide and nitrogen oxide mix with water to form sulphuric acid and nitric acid - these gases are produced by cars, factory emissions and the burning of fossil fuels. |
Acid rain - Effects | Water supplies are polluted, forests and trees die, soil and crops are contaminated and become carcinogenic, buildings are eroded |
Acid rain - Prevention | Use renewable energy, electric cars/public transport, tax factory emissions, use smokeless coal |
Hot desert climate - Weather | By definition, places with less than 100mm rainfall per year. Near hot, dry trade winds. Sun is directly overhead. |
Hot desert climate - Temperature | During the day, it's very hot - up to 40 degrees C. Because there's no cloud cover, heat escapes at night and it reaches sub-zero temperatures. |
Hot desert climate - Animals and adaptions | Desert camels - humps to store fat Kangaroo rat - long legs for speed Desert Owl - makes homes in cactus Fennec Fox - large ears to hear prey and to cool off with |
Hot desert climate - Plants and adaptions | Cactus - prickles ward off most animals Creosote - poisonous to ward off predators All desert plants have long tap roots to get at the very low water table |
