Health is: State of complete physical, mental, and social wellbeing
Health behaviors: Person's ideas, convictions, attitudes about health and illness
Health belief model Relationship between beliefs and behaviors. Perception of susceptibility or seriousness of an illness equals the likelihood person will take preventative action
Health promotional model Positive dynamic state, not the absence of illness
Maslow's needs: 1. Oxygen, food, water, temp,elimination, shelter.
Maslow's needs 2: Physical and psychological safety
Maslow's 3: Love and belonging
Maslow's 4: Self esteem
Maslow's 5: Self actualization
Holistic health model Patients are involved and share responsibility. Mediation, music therapy, guided imagery, relaxation, reminiscence.
Internal variables: Developmental stage, intellectual background, perception of functioning, emotional/spiritual factors
External variables Family practices, psychosocial, socioeconomic, cultural background
Primary prevention Preceded disease or dysfunction, applied to patients who are considered healthy. Ex: health education, nutrition, genetic screening, and periodic examinations.
Secondary prevention Applied to individuals who are experiencing health problems, at risk for developing complications or worsening conditions. Prompt intervention leads to reducing severity of symptoms, allowing patient to return to normal as soon as possible.
Tertiary prevention When illness or disability is permanent, minimizing the effects of long term disease or disability. Directed at rehab, preventing complications and deterioration.
Pre-contemplation stage Not intending to make any changes in next 6 months. May be defensive or uninterested
Contemplation stage Considering a change in next 6 months. Acceptance of education and information
Pre-preparation stage Making small changes for plan in 1 month. Believes advantages, needs Assistance with planning.
Action stage Actively engaged in strategies, lasts up to 6 months
Maintenance stage Sustained change over time, 6 months or longer
Acute illness Reversible, short in duration with often severe symptoms
Chronic illness Persists for longer than 6 months, is irreversible, and affects functioning across more than 1 system.
Illness behavior: internal Perception of symptoms and nature of illness
Illness behavior: external Visibility of symptoms, social and family support, economics, behavior and emotional changes, body image impact, self concept impact, family role impact.
