axon microscopic fiber that carries the nervous impulse along a nerve cell
blood-brain barrier blood vessels that allow selective substances to enter the brain and keep others out
brainstem lower portion of the brain, contains the pons and the medulla
cell body part of a nerve cell that contains the nucleus
central nervous system aka "CNS", contains the brain and the spinal cord
cerebellum coordinates muscle movement controls balance
dendrite fiber of a nerve cell that is the first to receive impulses
dura mater thick, outermost layer of the meninges
nerve consists of axons and dendrites in bundles
neuron nerve cell, carries impulses throughout the body, we have about 10 billion
neurotransmitter a chemical messenager
peripheral nervous system nerves outside the brain and spinal cord
receptors organs that receive a stimulation and pass it on to the nerves in the body, skin, ears, eyes and taste buds are receptors
sensory nerves carry messages to the brain and spinal cord from a receptor
stimulus change that evokes a response such as light or sound
synapse where nervous impulses are transmitted from one neuron to another
