Definitions and Examples of Abuse

Physical abuse | The infliction of injury, unreasonable confinement or punishment with resulting physical harm. |
Psychological abuse | The threat of injury, unreasonable confinement and punishment, or verbal intimidation and humilitation, which may result in mental anguish such as anxiety or depression. |
Sexual abuse | Sexual conduct that results from threats, force, or the inability of the person to give consent, including but not limited to assault, rape and sexual harassent. |
Financial exploitation | An improper course of conduct with or without informed consent of the older adult that results in monetary, personal, or other benefit, gain or profit for the perpetrator or monetary or personal loss for the older adult. |
Active Neglect | The willful deprivation of goods or services, which are necessary to maintain physical or mental health. |
Passive Neglect | The deprivation of goods or services that are necessary to maintain physical or mental health, without a conscious attempt to inflict physical or emotional distress. |

HIPAA | Health Insurance Portability Accountability Act: this means that your health information is kept private and secure. |
PHI | Protected Health Information: Name, Address, Phone number, Credit card number, e-mail address, family members name, facility room number |
Consent | individual agreement with what is being done or asked |
Confidentiality | Keeping the knowledge of what has been said or done to yourself-not releasing information about a person. |
False imprisonment | Unlawfully restraining or restricting a person's movement. |
Exploitation | A type of abuse: using a person's personal resources without his/her knowledge or consent or with forced/coerced consent. |
Grievance | A formal objection: a situation where a person feels he/she has been treated unfairly and has a complaint. |
Invasion of privacy | Violdation of a person's personal space or right to be left alone e.g. releasing information about a person without his/her consent |
Ombudsman | An individual who cts as an advocate for a resident in a long-term care facility. |
