Dermatitis inflammation oof the skin- may occur due to disease, chemical exposure, allergic reactions, etc.
Lesion any abnormality of the skin, including tumors, rashes, wounds, etc.
Excoriation skin is reddened and scratched or broken open due to a wearing away of th surface of the skin
Alopecia loss of hair, baldness
Necrosis death of cells/tissues
Decubitus Ulcer "Pressure sores" or "pressure ulcers"area of cellular necrosis due to a lack of blood flow
Ischemia a temporary lack of blood flow to an area
Cyanosis a bluish color to the skin due to lack of oxygen
Macule fkat area if discoloration
Papule a raised or elevated area
Vesicle a blister-like raised area filled with fluid
Pustule a raised, reddened area with itching
Wheal a hive-like rausedm reddened area with itching
Crusts a scab-like covering over a wound or lesion
Erythema redness of the skin
Jaundice yellow color of the skin, especially noticed in the sclera (white layer of tissue that surrounds the eye)
Epidermis outermost layer of the skin. It contains only the skin pores and the hair shafts that pass through it.
Dermis "true skin" or corium. It is the layer of skin where the majority of structures are found, including oil glands, sweat glands, hair folicles, nerve endings, blood vessels, etc
Subcutaneous layer the layer that lies direcctly under the dermis layer. It is a fatty tissue designed for cushioning and protecting the body structures underneath the skin.
Psoriasis a genetic disorder that causes silvery "scaling" to occur on the surface of the skin
Eczema a condition where the skin becomes reddened and is either dry and rough in texture, or develops tiny watery blisters.
Impetigo a bacterial infection that causes small red macules to develop on the skin, which in hours tur into blister-like lesions and then into pustules. Eventually a thick yellow crust forms over the area as the secretions dry. This is a contagious infection and
Ringworm a fungal infection of the skin which is characterized by red papules and itching This condition can also be spread through direct contact
Pediculosis "lice". Lice may occur on the head, body, or pubic area.
Scabies the "itch mite". This is a timy red mite that is similar to lice in that they also bite the body and cause intense itching, especially in the areas of increased body heat
Stasis ulcers areas where the skin cells die due to inadequate blood supply. Usually occur on the lower legs due to decreased circulation
