PNS Drugs
Cholinergic and Anticholinergic Drugs
Question | Answer |
---|---|
Nicotinic Receptors | Motor nerves and skeletal muscles |
Muscarinic Receptors | CV, Respiratory, GI, GU, and eyes |
Cholinergic Drugs | Direct acting: stimulate cholinergic (nicotonic and muscarinic) receptors Indirect acting: prevents inactivation of actylcholine Uses: Diagnosis of MG, Alzheimer's disease, urinary retention Adverse Effects: BCDS |
Direct Acting: Urecholine | Action: Smooth muscle contraction due to muscarinic stimulation Features: Stimulates peristalsis; Do not use with obstruction; dose is lower when given by injection; oral dose is higher but poorly absorbed |
Indirect Acting: Tensilon | Action: Prevents breakdown of acetylcholine; restores normal muscle contraction in MG Features: Used to diagnose MG |
Indirect Acting: Aricept | Action: Prevents breakdown of acetylcholine Features: Slows progession of Alzheimer's disease |
Anticholinergic Drugs | Actions: Blocks acetylcholine receptor site; impedes contraction Uses: asthma, overactive bladder, bradycardia, heart block, peptic culcer Adverse Effects: BCDPT |
Atropine | Contraindicated with glaucoma, enlarged prostate, hernia, tachycardia, and MG |
