Skin: Benign Tumors

Pilonidal Cyst Lesion of the sacral area that often has a sinus track extending into deeper tissue structures; as cyst fills or becomes infected, it can become tender; Heals by second intention
Seborrheic Keratoses Common in older people; Gradually acquired after middle age and are often mistaken for actinic keratoses or pigmented skin cancers; commonly found on the face, neck, upper trunk, and arms
Seborrheic Keratoses Appear as multiple "pasted-on" papules or plaques ranging in color from flesh tones to brown or black; surface has a rough, greasy, wartlike texture on palpation
Keloids Overgrowth of a scar with an excessive accumulation of collagen and ground substance; more common in AFRICAN AMERICANS; often arise at sites of incisions, burns, and ear piercing
Keloids Elevated, protruding lesion that extends beyond the edges of the original injury; pressure dressings or elastic garments worn over the skin for 1 year after excision or steroid injection may also help to keep the lesion flat.
Nevi(Mole) Benign growth of the pigment-forming cells
Normal Nevi Well-defined borders aner are uniform in color, ranging from light colors to dark brown; surface mayber rough or smooth
Abnormal Nevi 50% of malignant melanomas arise from moles, nevi with irregular or spreading borders and those with multiple colors should be considered highly suspicious; sudden changes in the size of the lesion and complaint of itching or bleedinG
Abnormal Nevi BIOPSY OF ANY SUSPICIOUS LESIONS IS PERFORMED TO RULE OUT MALIGNANCY
Wart (Verrucae) Small tumors caused by papillomavirus infection of skin cells; rasied, flesh-colored papules with a rough surface; often on hands and fingers
Flat warts Range in size from 2 to 4 mm; appear as slightly elevated reddish brown or flesh-colored papules with flat tops and minimal scale; multiply and affect the hands and face
Planter Warts Bottom of the foot; Thick callus that when removed, reveals tiny black dots
Hemangiomas(Angiomas) Blood vessel tumors and are common benign tumors; appear shortly after birth and gradually expand with growth
Nevus Flammeus Congenital hemangioma involving capillaries; well-demarcated macular patches ranging in color from pink to bluish purple; fade during first year of life; Port-wine stain grows with child and remains unchanged in adult life
Cherry Hemangiomas Older adults; small, dome-shaped papules ranging in color from red to purple; TREATMENT IS NOT INDICATED EXCEPT WHEN THE CLIENT IS UNHAPPY WITH HIS OR HER APPEARANCE
