Otitis Media Teachings no swimming; no showers; DO NOT PUT COTTON BALL IN EAR...let it drain on its own
Otitis Media (chronic, acute, serous)= red eardrum; hearing loss; headaches, malaise; purulent exudate
Otitis Media.. tell mothers this Mothers SHOULD NOT have their baby lying down while propping a bottle up for feeding; chilren are more prone to developing an ear infection than adults
chronic otitis media= speech problems=speech therapy; children have straight eustasian tubes...leads to more earinfections; thick, red, bulging membrane; causes greater middle-ear injury
Lasix kills which cranial nerve?? CN VIII 8
Menier's Disease unknown cause; possibly due to lymph imbalance; s/s= tinnitus, vergigo, one sided sensornueral hearing loss; teaching= LOW SODIUM, FLUID RESTRICITCTION, move head slowly, mild diuretics, no smoking, larbynthectomy
vertigo= staggering, disorientation, OBJECTS ARE SPINNING, sense of falling, N&V, visual blurring, shakiness, headache, loss of hearing
Retnal detachment S/S flashes of light or curtins comming down
Retnal detachment treatment buckle= dr. repairs wrinkles or folds in the retina, a small piece of silicone is placed against the sclera and held in place by an encircling band; bubble= a gas or silicone oil is placed inside the eye, bubble floats up against retina to hold it there
Retnal detachment treatment bubbling pt placement pt lays with head on table, affected eye side up, as bubble holds retina in place
What colors are older people less likely to see?? Blues and Greens
What sitiuation would not allow an MRI to take place? Pt comes in with a metal hook in his/her eye
Fluorescein Angiogrpahy assesses ciruclation of eye, takes rapid sequence pictures; will have GREEN PEE, protective UV clothing, drink plenty of fluids to flush dye out of kidneys
OPEN angle glaucoma= type of glaucoma where fluid doesn't move because it's kinda backed up; typically no pain
CLOSED angle glaucoma= EMERGENCY; pain, NO FLUID, EYE PAIN, retnal detachment can occur!!! NO EPI eye drops!
Trabeculectomy Glaucoma procedure where the back of the eye is scarred on purpose
Bacterial Conjunctivitis "PINK EYE"; IT'S CONTAGIOUS eye infection of sebacious gland, usually caused by a staphyloccus aureus, haemophius influenze, or psudomonas aeruginosa; Treatment: warm compresses, topical antibiotics
Red Reflex reflextion of the retina...If you don't see it SUSPECT CATARACTS!
Looking thru opthalmoscope u see: thick copper wire veins in eyes and cotton wool Hypertension causes this inside of the eye
Looking thru opthalmoscope u see:Burst vessels in the eye Diabetes is the cause of this inside of the eye
Macular Degeneration; two types (Nonexudative=dry and calcification; Exudative=wet and metaporphopsia) Central Vision Loss; Age 65 & up, EAT GREEN LEAFY VEGGIES
What's the first thing you do when there is an insect in a pt's ear? kill the insect
Recovery from ear surgery do this avoid straining when you have a bowel movement; do not drink through a straw for 2-3 weeks; avoid air travel for 2-3 weeks; avoid excess coughing 2-3 weeks; stay away from peps with colds
Recovery from ear surgery do this if you need to blow your nose, blow gently, one side at a time, w/ mouth open; avoid a wet head for 1 week; keep ear dry for 6 weeks by placing a cotton ball coated with vaseline in ear, change it daily
Recovery from ear surgery do this avoid rapid head movement, bouncing, and bending for 3 weeks; change ear dressing every 24 hrs, report excessive drainage
