Term | Definition |
---|---|
ACE inhibitor | Block the conversion of Angiotensin I to Angiotensin II. Usually end in - pril |
Beta blocker (non selective) | Blocks stimulation of beta1 and beta2-adrenergic receptor sites. Also has alpha1 blocking activity which may result in orthostatic hypotension. Usually end in - olol. |
Beta blockers (selective) | Blocks stimulation of beta1-adrenergic receptor sites but usually does not affect beta2-adrenergic receptor sites. Usually end in - olol. |
Calcium channel blockers | Inhibits the transport of calcium into myocardial and vascular smooth muscle cells. This results in inhibition of excitation-contraction coupling and subsequent contraction. Usually end in - pine. |
Angiotensin II receptor agonist | Blocks the vasoconstrictor and aldosterone-secreting effects of Angiotensin II at various receptor sites, including vascular smooth muscle and the adrenal glands. Usually ends in - artan. |
