Geography

TermDefinition
isthmus A narrow strip of land that connects two larger land areas.
ecotourism A way visiting natural areas that conserves the natural resources, or habitat.
archipelago A chain of islands between the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean Sea.
civil war A conflict between two or more groups within a country.
Panama Canal Provides a water route connecting the Atlantic & Pacific Oceans.
cloud forest A moist, high-elevation tropical forest where low clouds are common.
dialect A regional variety of a language.
commonwealth A nation that governs itself, but is part of a larger country.
refugee Someone who flees to another country, usually for political or economic reasons.
Havana The capital of Cuba.
cooperative An organization owned by its members and operated for their mutual benefit.
Caribbean Sea An arm of the Atlantic Ocean between North and South America.
Greater Antilles An island group in the Caribbean that includes Cuba, Jamaica, Hispaniola, and Puerto Rico.
Lesser Antilles A group of small islands in the Caribbean; they stretch from the Virgin Islands in the north to Trinidad in the south.
coastal plains Lowlands next to the seacoast.
rain forest Heavily wooded forests that may receive more than 100 inches of rain per year.
tectonic plates A section of Earth's crust that floats on Earth's mantle.
deforestation The practice of cutting down forests for crops or urban use.
extinction The dying out of a species or type of living thing.
cash crops Crops for profit.
triangular trade Trade among 3 continents: the Americas, Europe & Africa
harbors Places where ships could land protected from the open seas.
dictators A ruler with complete control.
provinces Smaller parts of a larger nation.
scarcity A shortage of something.
