TermDefinition
Map Projection the representation on a plane surface of any part of the surface of the earth or a celestial sphere.
Planar Projection Map created by projecting an image of the earth onto a geometric plane
Conic Projection a map projection in which an area of the earth is projected onto a cone whose vertex is usually above one of the poles, then unrolled onto a flat surface.
Great Circle Route is the shortest distance between two points on the surface of a sphere
Cylindrical Projection A map created by projecting Earth's image onto a cylinder
Absolute Location The exact position of something on Earth
Relative Location Location in relation to other places
Elevation the height of a land surface above the sea level
Relief The variation in elevation across an area of Earth's land
Thematic Map A map that emphasizes a single idea or a particular kind of information
Global Positioning System a device that can determine absolute location by using satellites and receivers on Earth
Geographic Information System system designed to capture, store, manipulate, analyze, manage, and present all types of spatial or geographical data.
Remote Sensing the scanning of the earth by satellite or high-flying aircraft in order to obtain information about it.
