Becker says death is biologically innate, meaning.. we are born with the fear of death
What is the healthy minded arguement about the fear of death? We are born without the fear of death.
What is the morbidly minded view about the fear of death? we are born with an awareness of death and an awareness of our finitude
Becker must be implying that the fear of death is instinctual
What does Becker use to support his point? Repression, we repress death.
Paradox seeing something in two different ways
Paradox about death according to Becker one hand we are symbolic creatures with our art and religion, and on the other we are worm food
We are not Gods, we have bodies that will die finite
What does Becker mean by we are the status of a small God? we are the highest beings on Earth, we bath, we clean, we do something
Why are we hyper anxious creatures? Because we have too much awareness

Because we worry and get anxious and fear death, we respond by trying to forget we are going to die

To be normal, you have to deny what's real

Becker says sex on a basic level is animal procreation, the root of sexual guilt is because it is just an animal act.
Culturization the process whereby humans take the world of limitless possibilities but all cultures narrow those down to a select few. Ex. in no one place does everyone eat everything. We don't eat dogs, ppl in Trinidad don't eat frog legs.

A person's lifestyle is a vital lie, meaning... neccessary because you'll go crazy without it, to have a life of meaning, it's a fictious and made up on some level.

Most of us would fall into what Kierkegaardian category? inauthentic man
If you don't see the truth of this, you could be religious, but you'll only be religious in a cultural sense. It wouldn't be you, it would be artifical.
Until you realize that you will not have a truly meaningful relationship with God
Kierkegaardian does not believe in organized religion
Kierkegaardian thinks that through ________ you arrive at a true relationship with God Existentialism
Why would Kierkegaardian take it an extra step than Becker? Because he was spiritual.
What are the two main objections Becker had regarding Freud? Becker thinks the main determinat is more general than sexual libido, it's our animal nature and he thought through time we could cope by just using science.and reason.
Dictatorship of reason we will think through our problems using science and no one will need religion
Becker says There is something that religions gives people that they can't get anywhere else.
What are the two basic problems with romance? Sex, it's an animal act (anytime you engage in anything that brings you in contact with your animal nature it causes problems, your mate, after infactuation, the special person is not so special anymore.
Where do we get our Sexual taboos from? Your culture decides
Why do we read Becker? He challenges us and ask is religion based on the super natural or are we religious because of anality?
Becker says the orgin of religion is anality
Several people do not agree with Becker but even if you are a born again christian it has relavence to explain why everybody else is religious
