What is Plucking
What is Abrasion Abrasion is when rocks and stones become embedded in the base or sides of the glacier. These rocks are then rubbed against the rock surface as the glacier moves. Leaving behind a smooth polished surface
Explain the formation of a corrie Snow gathers in mountain hollows, especially northern facing hollows. Overtime, the snow is compressed into ice. Eventually due to gravity the ice starts to move out of the hollow and plucks rock from the back-wall and abrades the base. Leaving a corrie
Explain the formation of an arete Aretes are formed when two corries form next to each other and the rock between them is plucked away, forming a narrow ridge
Explain the formation of pyramidal peaks Pyramidal peaks are formed when three or more corries form back to back, the rock between them is plucked, forming a sharp point
v Glaciers normally follow paths called V-Shaped valleys. The glaciers pluck and abrade the valley's side and floor, giving it a flat floor and straight,steep sides(truncated spurs), forming U-Shaped valleys.
What is a misfit stream A misfit stream is any river flowing through a new U-shaped valley
What are ribbon lakes Ribbon lakes are formed in areas of the valley floor made of softer rock which are eroded more deeply, forming rock basins. When the ice melts these deeper parts of the valley floor fill with water.
