Nursing The science of nursing is the Knowledge base for the care that is given and Art of nursing skilled application of that knowledge to help others to reach maximum health and quality of life.
Nursing functions 1. Promote health and wellness 2. Help individual with problems of illness 3. Help in the prevention of illness 4. To restore health 5. To facilitate coping with disability or death.
Nursing roles in all settings 1.Caregiver (primary) 2.Communicator 3. Teacher/educator 4. counselor 5.Leader 6.Researcher 7.Advocate.
Standards of nursing practice as they apply to patient care. Standards allow nurses to carry out professional roles ,serving as a protection for the nurse, the Pt, and the institution where healthcare is given.
Community based nurses Clinics outpatient settings, homes(to minimize cost). Culturally competent and family centered; including home healthcare , community health centers, school nursing, occupational nursing, and independent nursing practice.
In-patient care facilities. Nurses has to have knowledge and skills to provide complex care for very ill Pt.
Influences that affect culturally competent healthcare. 1.Physiologic Characteristics 2.Psychological 3.Reaction to pain 4.Mental norms 5.Gender roles 6.Language 7.Personal space 8.food and nutrition 9.Family support 10.Socioeconomic factors 11.Cultural influences in illness care
Culturally competent nursing care Care is planned and implemented in a way that it is sensitive to the needs of individuals, families, groups from diverse cultural populations within society.
Health State of optimal functioning or well-being, not merely the obscene of disease or infirmity.
Illness Response of the person to a disease. It is a abnormal process in which the person level of functioning is changed when compered to previous level.
Wellness active state oriented toward maximizing the potential of the individual, regardless of his or her state of health.
Levels of preventive care 1. Primary (diet,immunization, exercise,...) 2. Secondary Prevention (screening for..., examination of...) 3.Tertiary prevention (Meds, med therapy, PT, Surgical treatment,...)
Nursing research To improve the care of people in the clinical setting and study of education, policy development, ethics, and nursing history.
EBP Evidence based practice is nursing care provided that is supported by reliable research based evidence.
Negligence. Preforming an act that a reasonably prudent person under similar circumstances would not do, or failing to preform an act that a prudent person under similar circumstances would do. Act of omission or commission.
Assault. The treat or an attempt to make bodily contact with another person without that person consent.
Battery. Assault that is carried out and includes every willful angry, and violent or negligent touching of another persons body or clothes or anything attached to or held by that person. Forcibly removing Pt clothing, administering injection,pushing.
Slander. Spoken defamation. Is a spoken or written words that falsely and negatively reflect on a living persons reputation.
Informant consent. Every person is granted freedom from bodily contact by another person unless consent is granted.In healthcare is needed for admission, treatment... Not for Emergencies. Nurse need to confirm that it was signed and answer any questions about consent.

managed care system. Used to managed care system to coordinate a patient healthcare to max positive outcomes and contain cost
Case management . The way to provide care that is designed to control the cost and still maintain quality.
3 Primary healthcare. Define as essential healthcare based on practical, scientifically sound, and socially acceptable methods and technology, made universally acceptable at cost they can afford.
The Nurse Practice Act. is an example of a statute that is passed by the state legislature
Board of Nursing. is an administrative body that is enabled by the Nurse Practice Act; the board adopts regulations that describe the parameters of nursing practice in more detail
Common laws. such as those created about informed consent and right to refuse treatment are determined via the court system.
Standards of Care. Legal guidelines for nursing practice The Nurse Practice Act JCAHO and Publications from professional nursing organizations such as the American Nurses Association and other specialty nursing organizations.
Malpractice. type of negligence in which four elements must be satisfied. You can see that an injury must occur in order for this type of negligence to be found. There must be a relationship between the nurse’s failure.
Negligence. this is conduct in which the care provided falls below the standard of care. An example from a health care facility might be a situation in which a nurse fails to provide care according to the standard described in the policies and procedures (P&Ps)..
Informed Consent. a person’s agreement to allow something to happen based upon full disclosure of risks, benefits, alternatives and consequences if not done.
Confidentiality. protection of patients’ privacy through both written and oral communication. This is covered under HIPAA orientation.
A major function of the registered nurse. to prepare the patient for self-care following an acute illness or following an exacerbation/complication of a chronic illness. For hospitalized patients, this process is known as discharge planning..
ICN International council of Nurses. Founded in 1899. First organization of professional women.
ANA Professional organization for RN in US. Established standards of practice, encourages research to advance nursing practice, and presents Nursing for legislative actions.
NLN Organization open to all people interested in Nursing. Obj. is to foster the development and improvement of all nursing services and nursing education.
JCAHO (jaico) Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations. Each nurse is expected to practice according to local policies and professional standards.
AACN national voice for baccalaureate and higher degree nursing education programs.
NSNA The NSNA is the national organization for student nurses. Established in 1952 with the assistance of the ANA and NLN, its members are students enrolled in nursing education programs.
AACN promoting universal access to healthcare as an example of social justice. Providing honest information and documenting care accurately and honestly are examples of integrity, and planning care in partnership with patients is an example of autonomy.
Nonmaleficence obligation to prevent harm
Autonomy respect for another's right to make decisions
beneficence obligates us to benefit the patient, justice obligates us to act fairly
fidelity obligates us to keep our promises.
