Which electrolytes are cations? (positive charged ions) CA++, K+, Na+, Mg++
Which electrolytes are anions? (negatively charged ions) Cl-, HPO-4, HCO3-
What does the Posterior Pituitary gland regulate? ADH
What does the Adrenal Cortex regulate? Sodium by releasing aldosterone.
What is "MODEL" mean for Hypernatremia? (causes of increased serum sodium) M= Medications, meals (too much sodium intake), O= Osmotic diuretics, D= Diabetes Insipidus, E= Excessive H2O Loss, L= Low H20 intake.
What is "MURDER" for increased serum K? M= Muscle Weakness, U= Urine, oliguria, anuria, R= Respiratory Distress, D= Decreased cardiac contractility, E= EKG changes, R= Reflexes, hyperreflexia, or areflexia (flaccid).
"MACHINE" signifies causes for increased serum K, what does it stand for? M= Medications, ACE inhibitors, NSAIDS, A= Acidosis, Metabolic and Resp, C= cellular destruction, burns and traumatic injury. H= Hypoalderosteronism, hemolysis, I= Intake- excessive, N= Nephrons, renal failure, E= Excretion- impaired.
What does "CATS" of Hypocalcemia mean? Sx of hypocalcemia. C= Convulsions, A= Arrhythmias, T= tetany, S= Spasms and stidor
Hypophosphatemia is phosphate deficiency, phosphate less than 2.0 mg/dl, what are causes? Intestional malabsorption, severe resp alkalosis, a loack of phosphate interferes with O2 tx'ed by RBC and energy metabolism. increased secretion of phosphate.
Magnesium greateer than _____ is panic level. 5 mg/dl is panic level, whereas, 1.8-3.0 magnesium level is normal.
Serum ______ goes down with Alkalosis. potassium
If the body is alkalotic then the kidneys drop the _______ level and lungs release more ______. kidneys will drop bicarbonate level, while the kidneys release more CO2.
Metabolic Acidosis is caused by 4 condiditons, what are they? Severe, diarrhea, ketoacids, shock, impaired kidney function.
With Acidosis, what serum level will go up? Potassium levels will go up
Metabolic Acidosis, is pH greater than? greater than 7.45
Metabolic Alkalosis, what are the serum levels and causes? serum levels of potassium, calcium, and pH will be high. It is caused by loss of gastric fluids, diuretics,blood tx, bicarb from CPR, TPN.
Respiraory Acidosis is pH below __________ pH is below 7.35
causes of respiratory acidosis? Over sedation, breainstem trauma, immobility, resp muscle paralysis,<-all are too slow resps. pneumonia, pulm edema, emphysema, bronchitis <- all are of lungs working too hard.
Resp Alkalosis can be caused by? hypeventilation, pulm dx, vent set too fast or too high, high altitudes.
What does Iron do? O2 transport& norm brain development and function.
What does iodine do? neurotransmitter fucntion, synethesis of T3 and T4 (thyroid hormones).
What does zinc do? immune system protection.
If Hemoglobin falls below 7.8 mg/dl, what are sx you will see? fatigue, weakness, SOB, cyanotic discolorazation around peripheral areas of the body.
decrase in Iodine leads to a decrease in T3 and T4 production, this leads to what sx? fatigue, weakness, cold intolerance, constipation, bradycardia, goiters as hypothyroidism sets in.
What foods are high in Zinc? proteins especially beef, pork, peanuts, and peanut butter, and legumes.
Hypertonic Solutions are? (ICF to ECF) D5LR, 3 and 5% NS, D5NS, D5 & 0.45NS
Isotonic Solutions are? (nada) 9% NS, LR D5W
Hypotonic solutions are? (ECF to ICF) 0.45% NS and 0.33% NS
