The definition of nutrition is? Process where the body uses food/nutrients for growth, repair and maintenance.
What is the definition of digestion? Process of getting food/nutrients into and out of the body.
3 main functions of the digestive system are: Digestion, absorption and elimination
Ingestion means? The act or process of taking food and other substances into the mouth
The digestive system starts with what organ and ends where? Starts at the mouth and ends at the anus.
The digestive tract is how long in an average adult? About 30 feet in length
What makes up the digestive tract? Series of hollow organs joined by a long twisting tube.
What are the major organs in the digestive tract? Mouth,teeth,pharynx,esophagus,stomach,small intestine,large intestine,rectum and anus.
What are the accessory organs in the digestive system? Salivary glands,gallbladder,liver,pancreas
What do salivary glandsdo? Secrete saliva which breaksdown carbohydrates
What enzyme does saliva contain? Amylase
Where is the most concentrated bile stored? The gallbladder
Cholelithiasis is what? Inflammation of the gallbladder
The largest glandular organ in the body is the ? Liver
What does the liver do? Manufactures: bile,fibrinogen,heparin,prothrombin and blood proteins(albumin and gamma globulin) STORES: Fe,B12,A,D,E and K, PRODUCES: body heat and detoxifies the body.
Where is the pancreas located? Behind the stomach
Other than producing digestive enzymes, what does the pancreas do? Secretes insulin and glucagon which regulates the glucose levels in the blood.
What is the gland under the tongue called? Sublingual gland
What is the muscular contraction that moves food down the esophagus called? Peristalsis
Where is the pyloric sphincter located? The opening of the small intestine at the base of the stomach.
Semi-liquid food moving throught the small intestine is called? Chime
What does chime mix with in the small intestine? Bile from the liver and gallbladder and pancreatic juices from the pancreas.
What are the 3 main portions of a tooth? The crown, neck and the root
How many sets of teeth do humans have? Two
What are the two sets of teeth humans have? 28 deciduous teeth (baby teeth)32 permanent teeth
How many types of taste buds does a person have? 4 types: Sweet, salt ,sour and bitter
The 3 pairs of salivary glands are the: The parotid, the sublingual and the submandibular
What disease is caused by a lack of Vitamin C? Scurvy
Rickets is caused by a lack of what vitamin? Vitamin D
Beriberi is more common where? Rice growing regions
What causes beriberi? Lack of Thiamin
What is one vitamin that is not stored in the body? Vitamin C
