TermDefinition
Hepatitis Inflammation of the liver caused by viruses, bacteria, and noninfectious causes of liver inflammation.
Parenchyma Tissue of an organ, as oppposed to supporting or connective tissue.
Ascites An accumulation of fluid and albumin in the peritoneal cavity
Spider Telangiectases Small, dilated blood vessels with a bright red center point and spider-like branches.
Jaundice yellow discoloration of the skin, mucous membranes, and sclerae of the eyes, caused by greater than normal amounts of bilirubin in the serum.
Paracentesis A procedure in which fluid is withdrawn from the abdominal cavity.
Esophageal Varices A complex of longitudinal, tortuous veins at the lower end of the esophagus
Hepatic Encephalopathy A type of brain damage caused by liver disease and consequent ammonia intoxication.
Asterixis Hand-flapping tremor in which the patient stretches out an arm and hyperextends the wrist with the fingers separated, relaxed, and extended.
Flatulence Excess formation of gases in the stomach or intestine.
Steatorrhea Stools that contain fat.
Occlusion An obstruction or closing off.
Achalasia inability of the lower esophageal sphincter to open and let food pass into the stomach.
Lumen the channel within a tube such as a blood vessel or to the cavity within a hollow organ such as the intestine.
Anastomosis the connection of two structures such as loops of intestine.
Cachexia General physical wasting with loss of weight and muscle mass due to a disease
Dysphagia difficulty in swallowing
Carcinoembryonic Antigen (CEA) describes a set of highly related glycoproteins involved in cell adhesion. CEA is normally produced in gastrointestinal tissue during fetal development, but the production stops before birth.
Achlorhydria absence of hydrochloric acid in the gastric secretions
Dehiscence a surgical complication in which a wound ruptures along surgical suture.
intussusception the inversion of one portion of the intestine within another.
Hematemesis the vomiting of blood
Exacerbation increase in the severity of a disease or its signs and symptoms
Evisceration extrusion of viscera outside the body, through a surgical incision
Leukoplakia a mucous membrane disorder characterized by white patches, especially on the cheek, tongue, vulva, or penis
Melena dark sticky feces containing partly digested blood. -the production of melena, following internal bleeding or the swallowing of blood
Occult Blood Hidden blood usually in stool
Pathognomonic specifically characteristic or indicative of a particular disease or condition.
Remission a diminution of the seriousness or intensity of disease or pain; a temporary recovery
Stoma an artificial opening made into a hollow organ, especially one on the surface of the body leading to the gut
Tenesmus Straining to defecate or urinate.
Volvulus rotation and twisting of the cecum toward the left upper quadrant, with ascending colon obstruction; associated with a cecum on a long mesentery.
