Latitude, Longitude, Hemispheres and Mapping Vocabulary
Term | Definition |
---|---|
latitude | distance measured in degrees north or south of the equator and lines are often called parallels. |
longitude | measurement in degrees east or west of the Prime Meridian or International Date line. These lines are often called meridians. |
Prime Meridian | the longitudinal line that passes through Greenwich, England = 0 degrees |
Equator | latitudinal line that circles that globe halfway and separates the Northern and Southern hemisphere = 0 degrees |
parallels | horizontal line that circles east to west of a map starting at an equator |
meridians | Vertical lines on a map or globe running from North Pole to South Pole along Earth’s surface |
symbols | Drawing on a map that represents a real object |
Legend | also known as a key and lists the map symbols and their meanings |
compass rose | A circle divided into eighths It shows the four directions and directions between the four. |
scale | Feature that relates distances on a map to actual distances on Earth’s surface example: ( 1cm=5km) |
globe | three-dimensional model of Earth’s surface |
distortion | error in shape, size or distance |
Map | flat, two-dimensional model of Earth’s surface |
grids | intersecting lines on a map or globe that help us find places on earth |
hemispheres | halves of earth |
cartographer | mapmaker |
continents | 7 major land masses on earth |
oceans | the 5 bodies of salty water that make up most of the earth |
