TermDefinition
symbol are used to represent real objects
legend usually found in the corner of a map - it's where you find out what the symbols on the map mean
scale hows how much smaller than real life a map has been made
map a drawing of a place from a "bird's eye" view;a drawing to show important details about a place
compass is a navigational instrument that shows directions in a frame of reference that is stationary relative to the surface of the Earth
grid a way of using lines and numbers and letters to find places on a map
index a list found in the back of an atlas, it tells you where to find a place on a map
label names used by map-makers to name things on a map
cardinal directions the directions of north, east, south, and west, commonly denoted by their initials: N, E, S, W.
compass rose an instrument that shows the directions (north, south, east, west)
key like a legend - it explains what the symbols on the map mean
title tells you the name of the place or topic the map is about
