globe a scale model of the earth
grid a pattern of imaginary lines that circles the globe in east-west and north-south directions
latitude the east-west lines in the grid
parallels lines of latitude
equator an imaginary line that circles the globe halfway between the North and South Poles
degrees° a unit of measurement in geography
longitudes the north-south imaginary lines
meridians lines of longitude-pass through the poles-measure distance east and west of the prime meridian
prime meridian an imaginary line that runs through Greenwich, England-represents 0°
hemispheres division of the Earth by the equator and prime meridian
continents the 7 large landmasses of the earth
islands landmasses smaller than continents and completely surrounded by water
map a flat diagram of all or part of the Earth's surface
map projections different ways of showing our round planet on flat maps
compass rose directional indicator that show which way north, south, east, and west on a map
bar scale scales that give distances in miles and kilometers
legend explains what the symbols on the map represent
locator map shows where in the world the area on a the map is located
political map show the major political features of a region
physical map shows the major physical features of a region
