anaphylactic shock | extreme, sometimes fatal, allergic reaction to an antigen |

contusion | An injury in which the skin is not broken; a bruise |
crust | scab |
cyanotic | blue due to lack of oxygen |
debride | clean wound to remove foreign matter and dead (necrotic) tissue |
decubitus ulcer | a chronic ulcer of the skin caused by prolonged pressure on it, bedsore |
dermal ulcer | pressure sore or ulcer |
dermis | lies under the epidermis and contains nerve endings and blood and lymph vessels |
epidermis | top layer of skin made of dead skin cells |
eschar | dry scab or slough formed on the skin as a result of a burn |
excoriation | tear or wear off the skin |
friction | rubbing skin against another surface |
hematoma | a localized mass of blood confined to 1 area |

macule | flat, discolored spot on the skin |
malodorous | having a bad or foul odor |

nodule | small knotlike protrusion, small mass of tissue |

pallor | less color than normal for the skin |
papule | solid, elevated lesion of the skin |
pediculosis | body lice |
pressure ulcer | bed sore resulting from staying in 1 position too long |
pustule | small inflamed swelling of the skin that is filled with pus |
rubra | unusual redness or flushing of the skin |
sebaceous gland | gland that secretes oily matter for lubricating hair and skin |
senile purpura | dark purple bruises on forearms & back of hands, commonly in elderly |
shearing | when the skin is stretched in 1 direction & the underlying bones move in the opposite direction |
skin tear | shallow injury, epidermis is ripped or torn |
subcutaneous tissue | layer of skin under dermis, attaches skin to muscle |
sudoriferous gland | sweat glands |
tepid | lukewarm |
vesicle | blister-like skin lesion |
wheal | small swelling on the skin, like an insect bite, that usually itches or burns, a welt |
