What factors influence pulmonary function? developmental stage, environment, individual and lifestyle factors, medications, and pathophysiological states
Why are premature infants at risk for Respiratory Distress Syndrome? premature infants (<35 weeks gestation) do not have fully developed alveolar surfactant system
What is surfactant? keeps air sacs inflated for effective respiration
atelectasis collapse of alveoli
Why are infants born at term at risk for oxygenation problems? 1. lower airway structures are small and immature, allowing infection to spread rapidly 2. airways are narrow 3. CNS is immature 4. immature immune system 5. putting things in mouth
Why are toddlers still at high risk for URIs? 1. the tonsils and adenoids are relatively large 2. exposed to new infections at school/daycare
How does Stress affect pulmonary function? stress response stimulates release of catecholamines from the Sympathetic Nervous System resulting in increased tendency to blood clot
allergy hypersensitivity or over-response to an antigen; causes inflammation
How does air quality affect pulmonary function? air pollution triggers respiratory problems that interefere with oxygenation.
