Professional Nursing

TermDefinition
ICN = International Council of Nursing (2002) – advocacy promote safe environment, research, education as key role of nursing
ANA – American Nurses Association (2003) describes values and social responsibility, definition and scope of practice, nursing knowledge base, methods by which nursing is regulated.
Focus on human experiences: birth, health, illness and death
Knowledge base: diagnosis, interventions, evaluation of outcomes
Nursing Purpose/Aims: promote health, prevent illness, restore health, facilitate coping with disability or death
Promoting Health: engage in attitudes/behaviors that enhance quality of life in both healthy and ill: improve nutrition, improve physical fitness, prevent drug/alcohol misuse, smoking cessation, prevent injuries at home/work
Prevent illness: immunizations, prenatal care, infant care, prevention of STDs
Restore Health: focus on direct care to the ill by: administering med, baths, special procedures, txs, diagnostic assessment procedures – i.e. BP, checking stool for occult blood Consulting w/ other health professionals.
Restore Health cont': Rehabilitation of the client to optimal level of function following physical/mental illness, injury chemical addiction
Coping: Care and comfort for all ages. Maximize the person’s strengths and potentials through teaching and referrals to support.
To meet aims: nurse uses knowledge, skills and critical thinking.
Cognitively: how things make sense, use critical thinking to solve problems creatively – top skill of a professional nurse is one who thinks through and evaluates each of his/her patients needs carefully. Uses critical thinking to solve problems creatively
Technically: manipulate equipment with competence and ease to produce desired outcome. (iPod, iPad, computers at the bedside, surgical techniques – just to name a few)
Interpersonally: establish and maintain caring relationships to achieve goals. Communicating and working collaboratively with patient, heath care team
Ethically and legally: conduct in manor of personal moral code, and professional role responsibility.
Direct care giver: Provide total care for pt Using nursing process to develop appropriate plan of care, carry it out and evaluate effectiveness Uses skills of assessment, planning, interventions and evaluations to meet pt need Documentation!!
Advocate: speaking up for patient who cannot speak for themselves, seeks to do what’s best for pt, Ensures pt’s needs are met, Provides support “Nurse Practice Act”, Requires good communication and assertiveness on the part of the nurse
Case Manager: Oversees all aspects of care Organizes and obtains meds, equip, consults, family meetings, discharge planning, referrals Individualizes care
Educator: Medications, health promotion, disease prevention, discharge, literature, websites Good communication
A nurse who explains a surgical procedure to a patient in order to obtain informed consent is fulfilling the role of: The advocate.
Nurse Practice Act: establishes criteria for the education and licensure of nurses.
Nursing process: is a guideline for nursing practice enabling nurses to implement their roles.
ANA standards of nursing practice: protect and allow nurses to carry out professional roles.
The National League of Nursing fosters the development and improvement of nursing services.
The mission of the Massachusetts Board of Registration in Nursing: is to protect the health, safety and welfare of the citizens of the Commonwealth through the fair and consistent application of the statutes and regulations governing nursing practice and nursing education.
The Nursing Process (Steps): 1.Assessment 2.Diagnosis 3.Outcome identification and planning 4.Implementation 5.Evaluation
Assessing: collecting, validating, and communicating of patient data (what you have learned in Health Assessment)
Diagnosing: analyzing patient data to identify patient strengths and problems
Planning: specifying patient outcomes and related nursing interventions
Implementing: carrying out the plan of care
Evaluating: measuring extent to which patient achieved outcomes
Characteristics of the Nursing Process: systematic, dynamic, interpersonal, outcome oriented, universally applicable
Systematic: part of an ordered sequence of activities
Dynamic: great interaction and overlapping among the five steps
Interpersonal: human being is always at the heart of nursing
Outcome Oriented: nurses and patients work together to identify outcomes
Universally Applicable: a framework for all nursing activities
Concept mapping: is an instructional strategy that requires learners to identify, graphically display, and link key concepts.
