Renal diagnostic tests

TestDescription
KUB x-ray of abdomen and pelvis that shows shape, size, and position of kidneys
IVP x-ray that visualizes urinary tract after IV contrast
Retrograde pyelogram x-ray of urinary tract after IV contrast; then cystoscopy is inserted. Ureteral catheters insert contrast into renal pelvis.
Renal ultrasound sound waves interpret tissue density to detect structural defects
CT scan Like an ultrasound but better at detecting structural problems. Can be with our without contrast.
MRI Radiofrequency waves and magnetic fields help visualize kidneys.
Cystogram contrast material into bladder via cystoscope or catheter to visualize bladder and check for reflux
Renal arteriogram Contrast material injected into the renal artery by cath into femoral artery to visualize renal blood vessels.
Renal scan Radioactive isotopes injected IV to show blood flow, GFR, and perfusion
Cystoscopy Lighted scope used to visualize bladder; lithotomy position, with or without sedation
Renal biopsy Percutaneous to obtain tissue sample for examination; may be with or without US guidance
