What is the definition of Anorexia Nervosa? a morbid fear of obesity and a gross distortion of body image. Individual believes that he/she is fat even when emaciated. Commonly accompanied by depression and anxiety.
What is the definition of Bulimia? characterized by the consumption of huge amounts of food, usually in short periods of time and often in secret. Tension is relieved and pleasure felt during a binge but shortly followed with guilt and depression and will then "purge". anxiety/mood issues
What is purging? self-induced vomiting or the misuse of laxatives, diuretics, or enemas
What does emaciated mean? bony, very thin especially from disease
what is body image? A persons perception of his/her own physical appearanceW
What is diagnostic criteria for Anorexia? - refusal to have normal body weight, loss weight were they are at less than 85% than expected, fearful of gainining weight although very thin, amenorrhea, denial of LBW. there is restricting and purge type
What is diagnostic criteria for Bulimia? eating alot in short period, feeling out of control and guilty so respond by purging so dont gain weight. this behavior happens atleast 2x/week for 3 mos. purging and non-purging (excessive exercise/starving)
What are some psychodyamic factors influencing eating disorders? eating disorders result from early and profound disturbances in mother-infant interactions- unfilled sense of seperation. Mom response to emotional needs by giving food.

Why is it important for family members to be involved in the therapy of anorexia or bulimia? • Many eating disorders considered family disorders • Resolution not achieved until family dynamics improved • Education for the entire family on disorder’s manifestations, possible etiology, and prescribed treatment
What psychopharmacological treatments are used with eating disorders? • No medications specifically indicated for eating disorders • Prescribed medications are used for associated symptoms such as anxiety and depression
What are the side effects of psychopharmacological treatments? • Withdrawal with rebound weight gain • Lethargy • Depression
Ways anorexia affects your body? osetoporosis,hair thin, low BP, brittle nails, anemia, constipation, cant think right, dry skin, missed periods,
Ways bulimia affects your body? irreg heart beat, cavities, lose tooth enamel, stomach ulcers, abrasion of knuckles, low Mg, K and Na, sore throat, ruputure esophagus, sore and swollen checks, diahrrhea/consipation mixed.
