Long Island

Island A body of land surrounded on all sides by water
Bay A body of water connected to an ocean and partlyl enclosed by land.
Ice Age A time during which it was very cold, thousands and thousands of years ago, when glaciers formed.
South Shore Southern part of Long Island, characterized by flat, sandy land which stretches in an (almost) straight line.
Barrier Beach Narrow strips of land which seperate the mainland from large bodies of water.
Erosion The gradual washing away of soil.
Bay A body of water connected to an ocean and partly enclosed by land.
Peninsula A piece of land that sticks out into the water ( another name is a neck).
Geography The study of land and the manner in which people use it.
Shoreline Land along the sea.
Climate The type of weather a place has over a period of time.
Sand dunes Small hills of sand created by the wind.
Glacier A large mass of ice.
Norrth Shore Northern part of Long Island, characterized by curvy, rocky, hilly land.
Gulf Stream The warm current of water that flows through the Atlantic Ocean.
Cliffs High, steep rocks that rise sharply from the shoreline.
Topsoil The top layer of earth.
Cove A small bay surrounded by hills.
Harbor A protected body of water where ships can anchor.
Long Island Sound The long stretch of water that borders the North Shore.
Sound A sound is a long body of water that connects two larger of bodies of water.
