Identify the purpose of the Standards of Nursing Practice. To make he/she accountable for their behaviors.
What is acute illness? Rapid, sudden onset illness that generally lasts for a short time and are self-limiting. Usually have uncomplicated illnesses and make a full recovery.
What influences illness behaviors? Illness behaviors are highly individualized & influenced by age, gender, family values, economic status, culture education level & mental status.
Identify & give examples of the various behaviors of clients w/ acute illness. 1)Experience symptoms (pain, swelling) 2)Assume sick role (identify they are sick & seek validation from others) 3)Seeking medical care 4)Assume dependent role (accepts dx & tx plan) 5)Achieve recovery & rehab (assume prior role, give up dependent rol
How does chronic illness behaviors differ from acute illness behaviors? Chronic illness suffers need to live as normal as possible despite symptoms, adapt activities of daily living, grieve the loss of function/structure/income status/roles/dignity, treatment compliance, maintain positive self-concept & hope, confront death.
What are special concerns of the young adult population (Age 18-40)? Risks for: Unintentional (MVA's, environmental hazards) & intentional (self-harm, suicides) injuries, STDs, substance abuse (nicotine, pot, cocaine & crack), physical/psychological stressors (sun, chemical, pregnancy, divorce, domestic violence, poverty).
Assessment guidelines for young adult. Physical: ht/wt/bp/vision Health Hx: Questions re: substance abuse, sexual activity, exercise, eating habits, coping mechanism, family changes & illnesses,
What are special concerns of the middle adult population (Age 40-65)? Risk for: Obesity, CV disease, Cancer, Substance Abuse, Physical/Psychological Stressors (changing/transitioning from one role to another, accepting changes in physical appearance, mortality, children leaving home or staying too long, divorce, financial)
Assessment guidelines for middle adult. Physical: review of all body systems , bp, vision, hearing, cancer risks Health Hx: Questions re: food intake, exercise habits, substance abuse, sexual activity, reproductive changes, coping mechanisms, family hx of chronic illnesses.
What are special concerns of the older adult population (Age > 65)
Assessment guidelines for older adult.
Name & describe the 3 levels of illness prevention. Primary (specific actions to prevent or delay disease occurrence), secondary (activities that emphasize early diagnosis & treatment of an already present illness or stop a pathological process), tertiary (rehab).
Give examples of primary illness prevention. Protecting oneself against environmental risks, eating nutritious foods, protecting against environmental hazards, obey seat belt laws, sex counseling & safe practices, immunizations, genetic screenings), eliminating alcohol & smoking
Give examples of secondary illness prevention. Screenings for diseases such as hypertension, DM, glaucoma, physical examination for breast & testicular cancer, TB skin tests, specific tx for illness.
Give examples of tertiary illness prevention. Medical or surgical treatment, rehab programs, work training programs post illness or injury
