Define: Asepsis. Practices used to prevent the introduction of microorganisms that could cause infection.
Define: Medical Asepsis Reduce the number of pathogens.
Define: Surgical Asepsis Eliminate ALL pathogens
When is surgical aseptic technique used at the bedside? Insertion of devices into sterile body cavities, perforation of the skin. impaired skin integrity (wounds)
What is not sterile in a sterile field Objects out of site, outer perimeter of sterile field, objects touched by unsterile objects.
Does moisture contaminate a sterile field? Why? Yes? Capillary Action AKA Stike Through pulls microorganisms through a surface and contaminates the area.
Can skin be sterile? No
Describe Type IV reaction to latex Delayed, cell-mediated. Within 48 hours, hives, couging, redness, itching, watery eyes.
Describe Type I reaction to latex Immediate, life-threatening. Shock, Laryngo-spasms, anaphylaxis
Who is at risk for a latex allergy? Anyone with repeated exposure to latex (HX of condom catheters, childhood surgery, congenital urogenital defects)
