Vocabulary

QuestionAnswer
compass rose A device for determining directions.
cardinal directions The major intermediate directions - directions between the four major directions - northeast, northwest, southeast, southwest.
title The name given to a document or map.
scale The size of a picture or model of a thing compared to the size of the thing itself.
legend An explanatory list of the symbols on a map or chart.
grid A network of horizontal and perpendicular lines (as for locating points on a map by means of coordinates).
location Where a place can be found.
locator map A smaller picture of the globe identifying the location of a specific place on the globe.
hemisphere One of the halves of the earth as divided by the equator or by a meridian.
ocean 1. The whole body of salt water that covers nearly three fourths of the surface of the earth. 2. One of the large bodies of water into which the ocean is divided.
continent One of the great divisions of land (as North America, South America, Europe, Asia, Africa, Australia, or Antarctica) on the globe.
equator An imaginary circle around the earth everywhere equally distant from the north pole and the south pole.
Prime Meridian The meridian of 0Ëšlongitude from which other longitudes are calculated.
meridian 1. An imaginary circle on the earth's surface passing through the north and south poles. 2. The half of such a circle included between the poles. 3. A line on a globe or map representing such a circle or half circle and numbered by degrees of longitude.
International Date Line An imaginary line along the 180th meridian named as the place where each calendar day begins.
latitude 1. Distance north or south from the equator measured in degrees. 2. A region or locality as marked by its latitude.
longitude Distance measured by degrees or time east or west from the prime meridian.
parallel 1. One of the imaginary circles on the surface of the earth parallel to the equator that mark latitude. 2. A corresponding line on a globe or map.
place Describes what is special about an area in terms of its physical and human features, landforms, animals, cultures.
coordinates Any of a set of numbers used to locate a point on a line or surface or in a space.
region A group of places that share similar features.
movement How people, goods, and ideas go from one place to another.
human / environment interaction How people affect the environment where they live and how the environment affects them.
