Question Answer
SECOND LINE OF DEFENSE INHIBITS INVASION BY:  MICROORGANISMS
List the 5 major non specific defenses included in 2nd LINE:  Production of anti-microbial proteins, fever, inflammatory response, phagocytosis, & NK cells
NK cells AKA  null cells OR natural killer cells
Inflammatory process triggered by:  injury to body tissue
Inflammation helps in 3 ways:  1. PREVENT spread of invaders. 2.INITIATE repair mechanism. 3. DISPOSE of cell debries & pathogens.
Four signs of inflammation are:  redness, heat, swelling & pain
Fifth POSSIBLE sign of inflammation is:  impairment of function
Inflammation begins with release of inflammatory chemicals into:  EXTRAcellular fluid from cells
The inflammatory response also includes the release of:  blood proteins
Some important inflammatory chemicals are:  Compliment sys proteins, Histamines, Kinins, Lymphokines, & prostaglandins (PG)
Inflammatory chemicals promote:  VASODILATION
VASODILATION causes  HYPEREMIA
HYPEREMIA is:  heat and redness
Some chemicals increase permeability of:  capillaries
EXUDATE is  fluid with proteins (clotting factors)
Pain associated w/inflammation comes from:  release of bacterial toxins & pressure from swelling
EDEMA helps 3 ways:  1) ALLOWS ENTRY of clotting proteins 2)BRINGS IN lots of oxygen & nutrients 3) DILATES harmful substances
If the epithelial barrier is breached, what happens:  epithelial cells release B-DEFENSINS.
2nd line of defense includes:3  ANTI-MICROBIAL PROTEINS, DEFENSIVE cells & INFLAMMATION
ANTI-MICROBIAL PROTEINS are:  chemical weapons
DEFENSIVE CELLS attack:  all non self cells
EXUDATE causes:  swelling
CHEMO-TACTIC agents are:  inflammatory chemicals
B-DEFENSINS are:  broad spectrum antibiotics
Prevent-Dispose-Initiate refers to:  how inflammation helps
PG is AKA  Prostaglandins
Chemical Weapons are:  anti-microbial proteins
Inflammatory chemicals are:  chemo tactic agents
