lipid  A fat or oil.
metabolism  The total of all chemical reactions that occur within a living organism.
monosaccharide  The basic component of carbohydrates. A simple sugar such as glucose is an example.
nucleic acid  Composed of nucleotides, these polymers store and translate genetic code in organisms.
nucleotide  The basic component of nucleic acids consisting of a simple sugar, a nitrogenous base, and a phosphate group.
peptide bond  Amino acids are bound together by these covalent bonds.
polysaccharide  Large carbohydrate molecules composed of many sugar molecules. Examples are cellulose, and glycogen.
protein  Made up of amino acids, examples of this macromolecule are eggs, meat and fish.
RNA  A nucleic acid that is single standed.
deoxyribonucleic acid  DNA - contains the information that determines the characteristics of an organism.
amino acids  These joined by peptide bonds make proteins.
active site  The place where an enzyme and a substrate meet.
carbohydrates  Starches and sugars belong to this major macromolecule group.
dissaccharide  Two sugars joined together.
enzyme  A protein that joins with a substrate and splits it in two.
phospholipids  cell membranes are made of this hydrophobic/hydrophilic molecule
wax  this lipid forms the waterproof coating on plant leaves
steroid  a lipid hormone like testosterone
substrates  enzymes act on these
fatty acids  unbranched carbon chains that make up most lipids
polypeptide  long chains of amino acids;another name for a protein
