Class   Absorbent  
Pharmacology and Actions 1.  A.Binds and absorbs ingested toxins present in the GI tract following emesis or lavage.  
Pharmacology and Actions 2.  B.Once bound to the activated charcoal, the combined complex is secreted from the body  
Pharmacology and Actions 3.  C.Typically not effective unless administered within 30 minutes of ingestion  
Pharmacology and Actions 4.  D.Charcoal is often mixed with sorbitol to promote elimination from the gastrointestinal tract and to prevent constipation  
Indications  A. Poisoning/Overdose (after emesis/lavage, or in cases where emesis /lavage may be contraindicated)  
Contraindications  A. Not for use with heavy metal ingestion (Lithium or Iron), hydrocarbons, caustic alkalisB. ALOC (unless given by nasogastric or orogastric tube)  
Precautions and Side Effects  A.Currently many physicians are choosing to lavage the stomach before charcoal. This procedure is the followed by the administration of activated charcoal.B.Abdominal cramping, black stools, constipation, nausea & vomitingC.Not effective in hydrocarbo  
. Dosage  A. Adult: 1g/kg, typically 50 grams PO or gastric tubeB. Pediatric: 1g/kg, typically 25 grams PO or gastric tube – do not use with sorbital additive  
How Supplied  A. Bottles containing 25g/125ml or 50g/250ml bottles
