Plate Tectonics

Plate Tectonics 7th grade

QuestionAnswer
Plates slide past each other. Transform Boundary
Plates spread apart. Divergent Boundary
Plates collide. Convergent Boundary
One plate going under another is called... Subduction Zone
Volcanoes occur at or near these boundaries. Divergent and Convergent (only if subduction zone)
Mountains form at or near these boundaries. Convergent (or if volcanoes get tall enough, then divergent)
When continental crust and continental crust collide, these changes happen to the land. Mountains and earthquakes
When oceanic crust collides with either oceanic or continental crust, these changes happen to the land. Subduction zone that makes volcanoes (which can be mountains if tall enough)and earthquakes
What changes to land happen at a transform boundary? Earthquakes (and can change directions of rivers)
This type of boundary can form a new sea/ocean. Divergent
Evidence of a divergent boundary in the Atlantic Ocean. Earthquakes and volcanoes under water, Iceland getting wider (and having volcanoes), and the Atlantic Ocean getting wider (satellite evidence of this)
Evidence of Indian plate colliding with the Eurasian Plate The Himalayas are there and getting taller. The southern tip of India is moving northeast.
Many scientists think that this is happening in the mantle to move the plates. Convection Currents in the Mantle.
The cause of mantle convection. Magma near the core is hotter, so it is less dense and rises. Near the lithosphere, it is cooler and more dense, so it sinks like a brick.

Use these flashcards to help memorize information. Look at the large card and try to recall what is on the other side. Then click the card to flip it. If you knew the answer, click the green Know box. Otherwise, click the red Don't know box.

When you've placed seven or more cards in the Don't know box, click "retry" to try those cards again.

If you've accidentally put the card in the wrong box, just click on the card to take it out of the box.

You can also use your keyboard to move the cards as follows:

If you are logged in to your account, this website will remember which cards you know and don't know so that they are in the same box the next time you log in.

When you need a break, try one of the other activities listed below the flashcards like Matching, Snowman, or Hungry Bug. Although it may feel like you're playing a game, your brain is still making more connections with the information to help you out.
