SCIENTIFIC METHOD

VOCABULARY

variable anything that can affect the outcome of an experiment
independent variable the variable you will be changing in the experiment
dependent variable the variable that you will be measuring or observing
controlled variable the variable you will be keeping the same during the experiment
theory set of hypotheses that have been supported by testing over and over again
constant something that does not change
hypothesis suggested answer to a question- If...then...because
scientific method series of steps that can serve as a guide to solving problems or answering questions
data information/ facts collected during an experiment
analyze to examine something carefully in order to understand it
research to study and find out about a subject usually by reading many books about it or doing an experiement
error analysis looking at mistakes made during an experiment that influenced the expected results and determining how they can be fixed in the future
conclusion to arrive at a decision or realization based on the facts that you have
purpose goal/aim: the reason why something is made/done
observation something you have noticed from watching carefully
science the investigation of natural phenomena through observation, experimentation, and theoretical explanation
