What are the three types of rock? Igneous, Sedimentary, and Metamorphic.
How are igneous rocks formed? Igneous rocks are formed by the cooling of magma.
How are sedimentary rocks formed? Sedimentary rocks are formed when tiny pieces of rock and organic matter are cemented together.
Hows are metamorphic rocks formed? Metamorphic rocks are formed under extreme heat and pressure for millions of years.
What is one unique feature of sedimentary rocks? Sedimentary rocks often have fossils.
You find a rock in your yard, and it has foliated bands on it. Which kind of rock is it? It is a metamorphic rock.
Obsidian, kimberlite, and granite are all examples of what? They are igneous rocks.
What does foliated bands mean? Foliated bands are flattened crystals in metamorphic rock.
What is the definition of coarse-grained rock? A rock where the crystals or sediments are greater than or equal to 0.5 cm.
What does fine-grained rock mean? A rock where the crystals or sediments are the size of the period on this sentence or smaller.
What are sediments? Sediments are parts of rocks, shells, or dead organisms that have been weathered down over time.
Coal is what kind of rock? Coal is sedimentary.
True or False: Table salt is a mineral. True. Salt is just crushed halite.
True or False: Granite is a mineral. False. It is a rock, and like almost every other rock, it is made up of several minerals.
What is the rock cycle? The rock cycle is the processes that change the rocks. Melting rocks become igneous. Weathering and cementing turns them into sedimentary. Intense heat and pressure makes a rock metamorphic.
