| hardness | the resistance of a mineral to being scratched. (determined by Moh's Scale Ex. Talc=hardness of 1 and Diamond= hardness of 10. |
| adamantine | a brilliant luster such as that of a diamond, gem like. |
| mineral | an inorganic solid with a definite chemical makeup, hardness, density, and streak. Examples: gold, diamonds, feldspar Non-example: a rock (rocks are made of minerals) |
| metallic | very shiny luster, like processed metals, highly reflective, opaque minerals. |
| Moh's Hardness Scale | a scale developed by German mineralogist Friedrich Mohs to compare the hardness of different minerals. |
| streak | a powdery residue produced by minerals when rubbed across an unglazed porcelain streak plate. |
| pearly | luster with the appearance of a pearl, play of colors, light. |
| virteous | luster that can be described as glassy. (looks like glass) |
| water displacement method | a way to measure the volume of an irregularly shaped object using water. |
