Globe a scale model of the earth
Grid patterns of lines that circle a globe and run East and West and North and South. They are used to help us locate places on Earth.
Latitude lines that run East and West. They measure how far North and South something is from the equator.
Longitude lines that run from the North pole to the South pole. They measure how far East or West something is from the Prime Meridian.
Meridians another name for lines of Longitude.
Equator the zero line of latitude it divides the world into the Northern and the Southern Hemispheres.
Parallels another name for lines of latitude.
Equator divides the world into Northern and Southern Hemispheres. It is exactly halfway between the North and South poles.
Prime Meridian runs through an observatory in Greenwich, England. It is the zero line of longitude.
Continents large land masses. There are seven on Earth.
Oceans large bodies of water. There are only four on Earth.
Title shows what the subject of the map is.
Compass Rose a directional indicator that shows which way is North, South, East and West.
Scale tells the distance in miles or kilometers between two points on a map.
Map Legend explains what the symbols on a map mean.
Key another name for a legend.
Gulf a large part of the ocean that extends into land.
Bay a small body of water that extends into land.
Strait a narrow body of water that connects two larger bodies of water.
Lake an inland body of water.
Coral Reef an ocean ridge that is made up of the skeletal remains of tiny sea animals.
River a natural flow of water that runs through the land.
Delta a triangular deposit of soil where a river deposits soil into the ocean.
Wetlands and area of land covered by shallow water.
Island an area of land completely surrounded by water.
Peninsula an area of land surrounded by water on three sides.

Isthmus a narrow piece of land that connects two larger pieces of land.
Plain a nearly flat area of land.
Plateau a large. flat elevated area of land
Valley an area of low land between hills or mountains
Dune a hill of sand shaped by the wind.
Desert an extremely dry area with little water and few plants.
Oasis an area in the desert with a water source.
Forest an area of densely wooded land.
Sinkhole a circular depression formed when the roof of a cave collapses.
Mountain an area of rugged land that generally rises higher than 2,000 feet.
Hill an area of rounded, elevated land smaller than a mountain.
Volcano an opening in the Earth's crust where lava, ash and gases erupt.
Canyon a deep, narrow valley with steep walls.
Glacier a large area of moving ice.
Political Map a type of map that shows the boundries of a state or country
Electorial map A type of map that shows areas in terms of elections
Bar graph a type of map that consist of diffent rectangle bars either upright or on their side.
Pie graph A round map that illustrates a point by coloring differnt secftions of a circle
Primary source aa asource from someone that was present at the event or by thing present at the event such as a tape recording, diary or journal, photo or first hand account
Secondary source A source from someone that was not present at the event such as a textbook or second hand account
Physical map A type of map that shows geographic features
